SIL homes

If you or someone you care for would like to live independently, then a Supported Independent Living (SIL) home might be a great choice. SIL is an NDIS-funded service for people who need a significant amount of help at home every day.

This article defines SIL funding and outlines how a SIL house can help you meet your home and living goals.

What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of disability accommodation support. SIL providers build and maintain accommodation facilities that become the permanent home of NDIS participants.

Residents in independent living homes will be supported with daily tasks like personal care. Support staff are on hand in the supported independent living home to help with difficult or challenging tasks. A support coordinator ensures that a high standard of disability support is provided to residents in their own home.

When to choose Supported Independent Living

SIL is an excellent choice if you are an existing NDIS participant and you would like to live independently from family or friends. The services and supports you access will vary in relation to your support needs.

In supported independent living, you can receive assistance with many of the activities of daily life, including:

  • personal care

  • meal preparation

  • transport to or arrangement for visiting medical appointments

  • support to be involved in local community activities

  • support with life skills

A guide to independent living

Supported Independent Living homes are located in all sorts of neighbourhoods around the community. Most SIL houses have multiple bedrooms and are intended for shared use by several residents. SIL properties can be found near the city and in metropolitan areas.

Your supported independent living group home may have features including:

  • assistive technology to make communication easier

  • home modifications such as ramps, grab rails, and hoists, to keep you safe when moving around at home

  • wide hallways and easy access entry and exit points

SIL properties have been designed with input from an allied health professional to help ensure the safety and comfort of all residents.

Supported independent living funding

Supported Independent Living SIL funding is used to pay for the help you receive as well as your support coordinator.

SIL funding can not be used for day-to-day living expenses like:

  • rent

  • shopping

  • groceries

  • entertainment and hobbies

NDIS and SIL houses

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a federally funded support program for people with disabilities. To be eligible for the NDIS, you must have a permanent disability, which may be intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, physical, or psychosocial. You also need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and aged between 9 and 65.

People with very high support needs who require constant home assistance may be eligible for SIL accommodation. An NDIS support coordinator will assess your current circumstances and outline the most suitable home and living options to identify the best possible living options.

Short term accommodation may need to be considered while a longer term option is found.

NDIS plans and SIL

Each NDIS participant will have their ongoing requirements outlined in their NDIS plan. The NDIS plan also outlines family and informal supports that will continue to be provided, even after a person moves into their supported independent living home.

Each NDIS plan has a beginning and end date. They are also regularly reviewed. If you are happy living in your SIL home, your support coordinator will ensure the accommodation and SDA funding continue.
